The idea of a “no frills” unsupported run started in 1974 when Gordy Ainsleigh ran the Western States 100 course unaided after his pack horse was injured. His feat was repeated in 1975 by Rob Kelly, and again in 1976 by Ken Shirk. By 1977, this “low-key” skeleton crew ultra had gained a following of 16 racers — no entry fee, no race shirts, no awards — and was followed by the Leadville 100 in 1983 and the Vermont 50 in 1993. The term “Fat Ass” was coined by Joe Oakes, who founded the original "Recover from the Holidays Fat Ass 50" in Santa Cruz, CA.

The idea behind the Fat Ass is that it is an ultra race that requires minimal bureaucracy. There are no fees, no aid stations, and very little guidance at all (except, of course, the support of your fellow running community). As trail racing grows in popularity and the courses get more and more challenging, the record holders more inhuman and the fees increase, there remains a tradition of running for running’s sake in the presence of other likeminded runners.

“The truth is, and always has been, that you have a choice. You can run the race you’re hoping for, a different race, or create a race of your own. The beauty of Fat Ass runs is that they help create and/or enhance your own personal ultra-community.”

— Sherpa John, trailandultrarunning.com

The Wind Drinkers are proud to join this longstanding national tradition.

-->

50K (one 5K loop at a time). 9:00 AM.
