Summer 2022 Fun Run schedule

Spring is just around the corner, and it’s time to ready yourselves for our 2022 summer fun run season!
This year, we kick off the season at The Mountain Project on April 27th, where we’ll have a run through Story Mill Park, and listen to informative and inspirational talks from runners, the Mountain Project staff, and local public land managers, followed by a bit of socialization,  Come start the season off right with a fun evening!
We are also trying out some new running locations this year – including making a return trip to Manhattan for an early-season run, heading up to some new trailheads in Bridger Canyon, and conducting a joint event with the Bozeman Running Company during their June Brew Pub Run at Bozeman Brewing.
Here is the planned schedule (bear in mind that all locations are tentative while we coordinate these dates with the necessary local land managers!):

BSWD Fun Run – Lindley Park

Hi all,

THIS WEEK’S FUN RUN STARTS AT 6:00 PM and will be at Lindley Park.  We will start at the Pavilion. We’ll have a 1, 3, and 5 mile course.  Only two more runs then our annual meeting!  We’ve got some great participation awards this year that we’ll give out at the annual meeting and you need to run 10 times and time 2 to qualify.

We only have about 5 spots left in the John Colter Run and I expect it to fill up tonight!  These rainy days really get the folks on their computers signing up for our runs!  We have had 41 people sign up in the last week! It’s going to be a great run!
And it looks like it’s going to be a great winter as well!  I did a run yesterday from Bridger Bowl to the M and found this Wooly Bear Caterpillar between the north and south summit of Saddle Peak. There was an eight year study done in 1948 by Dr. C. H. Curan of the American Museum of Natural History to determine a correlation to the length of brown band to the coming winter.

 He studied thousands of worms and concluded that the smaller the band, the harsher the winter.  Of course, consider this worm was at an elevation of over 9000 feet so his perspective could be a bit skewed.  Even so, I’m hoping for lots of snow.

Hi all,

Looks like we’re in for a nice cool week and it feels like a touch of fall in the air now.  Some snow on those fires and we’ll be set.  This week’s fun run is a pot luck at Jackie’s house.  We’ll meet Wednesday at 6:30 pm for the run with a 1, 3, and 5 mile option.  To get to Jackie’s from downtown take Wilson south.  Follow Wilson through the light at Kagy as it becomes S. 3rd.  Turn left on Hill Street, then right on Highland Court, and it’s right there.  Bring a dish to share!  

The awesome cool air brings to mind the John Colter run to be held September 17.  The past few weeks we’ve been out working on the trail.  We cut the bushes on the trail near the river crossings, flag the course, build rock cairns, and re-furbish the existing cairns and signs.  We try to mark it with interesting and natural materials, along with a few beer bottles marked with survey flagging.  We still have some open spots, so if you haven’t signed up yet, we have a great run, two river crossings, bbq, live music and great prizes.  

I took this photo yesterday while working on the John Colter trail.  A black cat kept us company for several miles.  It seemed like he appreciated our rock cairns, but maybe he was just hungry.

Fun Run – Bozeman Creek (Sourdough Canyon TH)

Come for one of our most unique and popular runs!  This is a “no watch” run – no watches or other timing devices allowed!  You will run up the ever-popular Sourdough (Bozeman) Creek trail, and turn around whenever you think you need to, in order to get back to the start at your selected time – there will be options to choose the 15-minute, 30-minute, or 45-minute option.  Whoever comes closest to their selected time, wins (there will be one winner for each of the 15, 30, and 45 minute “races”)!

This is also a designated Dog Run, so feel free to bring your 4-legged-friend along!  Please be sure, however, to keep your pet on a leash, and clean up after your dog.  Those running with a pet are asked to wait 2 minutes after the start before hitting the trail, so that excited pups don’t interfere with the biggest group of runners!

To reach the trailhead, head south on South 19th Avenue.  At Nash, turn L, and drive to the Sourdough Canyon Road (follow brown sign to the trailhead).   Carpoolers can get a ride from Stockman Bank on S. 19th.

Fun Run – Tour de Critters

The Tour de Critters is one of the most popular Wind Drinker funs runs, year after year!  Run on land owned by Franklin Coles, a former BSWD President, the courses are tough, hilly trail runs high above the valley floor, with extensive views near Bozeman Pass.  This event was once known as the ‘Tour de Wolves’, as the Howlers Inn bed and breakfast, just down the hill from Franklin’s place, has a few rescue wolves in an enclosure.  When the wolves left temporarily, the ‘Wolves’ part of the run name was changed to ‘Critters’ – but now some wolves are back.  Watch, and listen, for them!
To reach the start, get on I-90 East and drive to the Jackson Creek Road exit.  Take Jackson Creek Road north (passing under the Interstate)   Drive about 3 miles, and turn right onto Bridger Hollow Road (look for the Howlers Inn sign).  Drive past the Inn, up the hill, and turn left at Absaroka Drive.  Run assistants will help direct you to parking.

Fun Run – Middle Cottonwood

A long-time club favorite!  Runs follow trails in the trees along Middle Cottonwood Creek, on the west side of the Bridger Mountains!  Come enjoy running the hills with us!

Middle Cottonwood trailhead is north of Bozeman – take Springhill Road north of the Interstate, and turn right onto Toohey Road.  At the end of Toohey, turn right onto Walker Road, which will bend back left (east) and become Saddle Mountain Road.  Continue on Saddle Mountain (do NOT turn onto Middle Cottonwood Lane – it does not lead to the trailhead!) until it makes a 90-degree bend to the left (north); go north across the creek, then turn right onto the continuation of Saddle Mountain Road, which leads to the trailhead parking.

Please consider carpooling to this event, as the trailhead parking lot is limited.  Carpooling will be from the NE corner of the Fairgrounds parking lot, west of the baseball stadium and across Oak from The Cannery District.  We will plan to leave from the carpool location at 5:30, as it’s a ways out to the start point.

Fun Run – Lower Mount Ellis

The Lower Mt. Ellis trail begins by crossing a large open field with a steady incline (bikers, take note: it’s a bit of a grunt). At the top of the field is treeline, where an old logging road takes you up and around to the east side of the mountain. After a couple miles and a few switchbacks, the logging road takes a hard left, and a single-track trail continues up the flank of the mountain—straight up, mind you. After gaining a knoll, the final ascent gets even steeper, eventually topping out on a limestone outcropping with sweeping views of Triple Tree below, the Gallatin Valley beyond, and mountain ranges in all directions. If you’re not too pooped, continue south along the ridge to Mt. Ellis.

Bogert Park

One of our most popular runs! Work up an appetite before heading downtown to the Bite of Bozeman food festival. Runs begin at Bogert Park on South Church, and head south along the Gallagator Trail.  The Medium and Long courses turn east on Kagy and follow separate routes that include climbs up onto Sourdough Ridge.

Fun Run – McGuire Treasure Run & Feed

Come enjoy runs along the trails of Grafs Park, Sourdough Trail, and the Spring Meadows neighborhood trail systems – nice, flat routes for those recovering from the Ed Anacker Ridge Run this week – then enjoy some runner camaraderie with a potluck, hosted by Jacki and Steve McGuire!

Runs start at the McGuire home – see the map link for location (address is 2302 Highland Court).

We will be eating after the run – if you can, bring a dish, salad, or dessert to share after the runs!
